Smelly Aircon: What Each Odour Means and How to Fix It
Mouldy, sour, or burning aircon smell? What each odour means for your Singapore home and whether you need a chemical wash or urgent repair.
The smell coming from your aircon is a diagnostic tool. Each distinct odour points to a specific biological or mechanical fault inside the system. Getting the identification right determines whether you need a filter rinse, a chemical wash, or an emergency repair.

Singapore’s SS554 Code of Practice for Indoor Air Quality emphasises the health risks of circulating airborne pollutants in enclosed spaces. Ignoring a foul scent allows mould spores and volatile compounds to multiply in bedrooms where windows stay closed for hours during aircon operation.
Smell-to-cause identification
Mouldy or musty smell
Fungi and biofilm multiplying on the evaporator coil, blower wheel, and drainage tray produce this damp, earthy odour. Singapore’s ambient humidity regularly exceeding 80% creates ideal conditions for rapid microbial growth inside running aircon units.
| Category | Assessment |
|---|---|
| Scent profile | Wet cardboard, old book, or damp towel left folded |
| Root cause | Biofilm and fungal colonies thriving in warm, damp internals |
| Required fix | Chemical wash to penetrate and destroy fungal roots. See what is an aircon chemical wash. Cost: S$80 to S$150 per unit |
| Urgency | High priority. Spores circulate every time the unit runs |
Households with children, asthmatics, or anyone with eczema should prioritise this treatment. Breathing active spores daily compromises respiratory health.
Sour or vinegar smell
A sharp, acidic scent resembling old gym clothes points to severe bacterial colonies producing acidic metabolic waste inside the system. This develops alongside existing mould and indicates the biofilm is well-established within the drainage system and coil surfaces.
| Category | Assessment |
|---|---|
| Scent profile | Sharp, acidic, like unwashed gym clothes |
| Root cause | Bacterial colonies releasing acidic waste compounds |
| Required fix | Chemical wash to dissolve hardened biofilm layers |
| Urgency | High priority. Acidic byproducts gradually corrode internal copper coils |
Burning or electrical smell
An acrid, plastic-burning odour is a critical warning that an electrical component is overheating or melting. Switch off at the main isolator immediately and schedule an urgent repair.
The SCDF reported electrical fires rising by 8.3% in 2025, reaching 299 cases in Singapore, with many originating from faulty appliances. The source could be a failing capacitor, degrading motor winding insulation, arcing wires, or an overheating PCB.
| Category | Assessment |
|---|---|
| Scent profile | Acrid smoke, melting plastic, or hot electronics |
| Root cause | Electrical components failing, arcing, or overheating |
| Required fix | Immediate power shutdown and professional diagnostic repair |
| Urgency | Extreme emergency. Never run an aircon emitting this smell |
Dusty smell
A light, dry scent that clears within two minutes of startup means accumulated dust on the filter and coil. Common in units left off for weeks during holidays or in unused guest bedrooms.
| Category | Assessment |
|---|---|
| Scent profile | Light and dry, like an old attic or unused cupboard |
| Root cause | Settled dust blown into room on fan startup |
| Required fix | DIY filter rinse first, standard servicing if scent persists |
| Urgency | Non-urgent. Address at next scheduled maintenance |
Stale cigarette smell in a non-smoking home
Nicotine tar from a previous occupant remains trapped inside the filter, coil, and blower wheel. This sticky residue continuously re-emits odour because nicotine volatile compounds bond tightly to cold metal surfaces. A chemical wash is required, and heavily stained systems in resale HDB flats sometimes need a second treatment.
Lingering cooking odours
When food smells take hours to dissipate instead of minutes, the coil and filter are saturated with grease aerosols. Surface wiping cannot break down this oil-based coating. Units near open-concept kitchens in newer Punggol and Tampines BTO flats are especially susceptible. A chemical wash dissolves the grease layer and restores proper air circulation.
What not to do
Do not spray air freshener
Air freshener masks the scent while biofilm continues multiplying and circulating spores through your living space. Synthetic fragrances near return vents introduce additional volatile organic compounds into enclosed rooms.
Do not use consumer “aircon freshener” sprays
Store-bought sprays act as weak disinfectants that cannot penetrate established biofilm. Many contain heavy oils that stick to coil metal and attract more dirt, creating a worse buildup. The sticky residue traps dust and encourages new fungal growth. Unapproved chemical mixtures can also void manufacturer warranties.
Do not just rinse the filter
Filter rinsing cures a basic dust smell but will never eliminate mouldy or sour odours. The biological growth causing severe scents lives deep inside the unit on the evaporator coil and blower, behind the filter.
Never ignore a burning smell
Electrical odours require total unit shutdown at the main breaker. Running a compromised unit drastically increases the chance of fire spreading to surrounding materials.
What our odour diagnosis visit covers
- Ask you to describe the smell character and when it started
- Run the unit to sample the circulating air directly
- Remove the front cover to inspect filter condition
- Check the visible evaporator coil through the vent opening
- Examine the drainage tray for stagnant water
- Recommend standard servicing, chemical wash, or urgent repair
If the team arrives expecting a chemical wash but discovers a minor dust issue, the service scope downgrades immediately. The reverse also applies. You always receive the intervention your unit actually needs.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my aircon smell mouldy?
Biofilm consisting of bacterial and fungal colonies growing on the evaporator coil and inside the blower wheel produces the mouldy smell. Standard servicing cannot fully remove it because the biofilm sits in areas surface cleaning cannot reach. A chemical wash is needed.
Can a smelly aircon make me sick?
A mouldy aircon can aggravate allergies, eczema, and respiratory issues, especially in children. Burning or electrical smells indicate potential fire risk and require the unit to be switched off immediately. Dusty smells are usually harmless and clear with a filter rinse.
Will air freshener solve a smelly aircon?
Only temporarily. The biofilm keeps producing odour and circulating spores through your living space. Air freshener hides the warning signal that something needs cleaning, making the situation worse over time.
